Curriculum Designers Faculty

  • Dr. Ann Johnson is currently the Director of Professional Development for CMI and a national consultant. She was a former classroom teacher, building and district administrator, and adjunct college professor who has worked with leaders and teachers in K-12 districts, post-secondary institutions, and private schools to implement curriculum mapping in their schools and districts. Her practical approach to implementing mapping is based on her experience working with schools across the country and leading mapping in both a suburban and urban school district in central Iowa.

    In addition to training teachers, administrators, and leadership teams in the mapping process, she has also trained leadership teams in developing implementation plans, a training design, and support structures to sustain short and long term change.

    Ann co-authored a chapter on implementation in Heidi Hayes Jacobs’ book, Getting Results with Curriculum Mapping and was featured in ASCD’s new DVD, Getting Results with Curriculum Mapping. She and Heidi have co-authored a training manual “Professional Development for Curriculum Mapping: Training Modules and Maps for Effective Implementation” to be published by ASCD late this fall. It features 12 training modules and maps to provide guidance to school leaders, staff developers, and leadership teams who are working to implement curriculum mapping in their schools or districts.

  • Dr. Susan Udelhofen is an experienced classroom teacher and national staff development provider who has provided consultation services throughout the United States to thousands of educators from small, large, rural and urban school districts, education agencies, colleges and universities. Her practical presentation style presents the step-by-step approach to curriculum mapping that is based on the work of Heidi Hayes Jacobs. Dr. Udelhofen's breadth of experience assists participants to work through the mapping process from building the curriculum maps to implementing strategies for effectively using the mapping data to improve student achievement and teacher learning.   • Earl Nicholas is currently Director of Communication for Curriculum Designers. An experienced mapper and curriculum mapping facilitator, he is a 35-year veteran teacher. Earl has also served as a software consultant since 1979, and as the district-wide mapping facilitator for a large suburban K-12 school system. Earl uses the model of Heidi Hayes Jacobs to conduct both large and small-group staff development programs around the country, emphasizing how teachers can integrate technology into their mapping process. Earl's effective combination of technology expertise, classroom experience, and light-hearted story-telling have brought him high praise from both administrators and teachers.

  • Janet Hale has been consulting and training for over 20 years. Her expertise and excellence is only surpassed by her desire to see all students and teachers achieve.   • Christine Shain has taught at the elementary, secondary, and university levels. She has been a curriculum mapping consultant for over ten years. Christine organizes, plans, and facilitates interactive workshops and training sessions for schools and districts throughout Canada and the United States. Her expertise lies in assisting school teams to conceptualize and implement a variety of educational practices, including curriculum mapping, curriculum development, essential questions, e-learning, assessment, and evaluation.   • Dr. Marie Alcock is a dynamic presenter with national and international experience working with and guiding schools through the mapping process. A true practitioner of mapping, Marie specializes in customizing the mapping process to the specific needs and current initiatives embraced by a school district.

    Currently a professor for Walden University teaching curriculum, instruction, and assessment in their graduate program, Marie offers a systemic approach to mapping that makes mapping the hub for all curriculum issues and focuses on making the map data useful as quickly as possible.   • Dr. Debbie Sullivan is assistant superintendent in MSD of Decatur Township in Indianapolis, Indiana who has first hand experience in supporting a school district in implementing the curriculum mapping process. She has worked in the district for over 20 years and has served as a teacher, consultant for staff development, assistant principal, and principal. MSD of Decatur Township has been using the curriculum mapping process for the past six years as part of the district reinvention and has worked closely with Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs.   • Jeanne Tribuzzi is the Director of English Language Arts, ESL and Foreign Language in the West Seneca Central School District in West Seneca, NY. She has served in a variety of roles in the West Seneca district for the past 19 years as a primary teacher, a middle school English teacher, the Director of Staff Development and is currently the ELA/ ESL & Foreign Language Director. Jeanne is helping to lead the curriculum mapping work in the district and has worked extensively with NY ELA standards. She works with teachers and schools across NY on curriculum and literacy and is working on her doctorate at the University of Buffalo. Jeanne presents at the National Curriculum Mapping Conference each summer and at regional conferences with Heidi Hayes-Jacobs several times each year. Curriculum Mapping Consultants

  • Dr. Pam Armstrong-Vogel is a superintendent in Iowa and is currently president of Iowa ASCD. She led Leadership Development at Heartland Area Educational Agency and assisted school administrators and leadership teams with the understanding and application of research-based practices, including alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment through mapping. For four years, she served as Curriculum Mapping Project Leader for the central Iowa education agency and facilitated a 26-school consortium as each district successfully implemented mapping.

    As a consultant who has presented and assisted schools through the mapping process, she shares how curriculum mapping impacts quality of instruction and student achievement. Her background as a curriculum director, middle school principal, special education teacher and her experiences with the implementation of mapping have enabled her to successfully share and lead the process with other districts. She has an in-depth understanding of mapping from both an administrator and teacher perspective.

  • Tamara Bauck is an education and evaluation consultant from Pierre, South Dakota. Prior to becoming a consultant two years ago she worked for the South Dakota Department of Education for seven years serving as the Director of the Office of Curriculum, Technology, and Assessment. While she was at the DOE she initiated a statewide effort to bring curriculum mapping to South Dakota schools. This initiative included building the capacity of a statewide system of mapping support for schools, as well as, securing statewide licensing for curriculum mapping software. In addition, Tammy co-lead a year-long curriculum mapping study in the state. Tammy has presented at a number of national and regional conferences sharing the learnings from South Dakota’s statewide curriculum mapping efforts.

  • Rima Binder is an educational consultant, formerly Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Gifted Programs for a large K-12 unit school district in a northwest suburb of Chicago, Illinois. She initiated and facilitated the curriculum mapping initiative in her district. Using Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs' model, a systemic change process was undertaken. She understands and shares the importance of curricular alignment through the mapping process as well as unit design.   • Gabrielle Charest is the Manager of Professional Development and Secondary Curriculum in a large, diverse, urban school district in northern California. She coordinates teams of mappers from both elementary and secondary schools who regularly videoconference with Dr. Jacobs. Her background includes principalships at both high and middle levels where she introduced mapping, and longtime experience as a presenter and adjunct professor focused on managing the change process for school improvement.   • Pat Jacoby is based in Austin, Texas and has been working with school districts in curriculum and assessment design throughout the United States for over 15 years. A former curriculum specialist for the state department of education, regional education service center, and district director of curriculum, Pat now works extensively with standards-based curriculum, curriculum mapping, and designing local assessment systems aligned to state standards.   • Nikki Roorda is a School Improvement Consultant for Heartland Area Education Agency (AEA) in Central Iowa. Iowa’s AEAs serve as an intermediate agency between the Iowa Department of Education and local school districts. Nikki previously served as the Ankeny Community School District’s Literacy Coordinator.   • Terri Ruyter has been an educator for almost 20 years. One of her first education courses was “Interdisciplinary Curriculum Design” with Heidi Jacobs in 1988. This course shaped her educational practice in the classroom and continues to exert a powerful influence on her professional development work with schools and teachers. A current focus of her work is on integrating literacy and the teaching of history without sacrificing the disciplinary integrity of either subject. The curriculum development work she is part of in NYC public schools strives to align instruction to New York State ELA and Social Studies standards and to integrate this instruction with the work of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. She has taught in independent schools in New York City and Santa Fe, New Mexico and is currently an instructional specialist in New York City public schools. Terri believes strongly that the mapping process is the key to deliberate and pragmatic use of multiple forms of data in order to enhance the learning experience of all students in our schools.

  • Dr. Regi Wieland is an Assistant Professor in the department of Educational Administration at Fort Hays State University, Hays, KS. Dr. Wieland has been an educator for 26 years, serving as a public school music teacher, a school improvement consultant to rural schools, and an executive director of an educational service agency. Her Ph.D is in Curriculum and Instruction and she continues to work as a curriculum consultant for many rural school districts in Kansas. She has extensive experience with various curriculum design models and helps districts with curriculum mapping, integrating standards into the curriculum, and the technology programs needed to support mapping initiatives. She also teaches graduate courses in curriculum design and evaluation for students preparing to be school administrators.

  • Brandon Wiley is the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the West Seneca Central School District, a suburb of Buffalo, New York. He has teamed with Jeanne Tribuzzi to lead his district through the mapping process. Brandon served as a staff development coordinator at Erie 1 BOCES focusing on curriculum and assessment development, data analysis, social studies and literacy instruction. He has taught at the elementary, middle, and collegiate level.   • Steve Zadravec is the Assistant Superintendent at SAU 52 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He has worked extensively in the areas of curriculum mapping and assessment. He has served as a consulted to schools in the process of curriculum mapping, specifically on how mapping can help achieve local goals related to student learning and the growth of a professional learning community. He has presented on a variety of curriculum and professional development topics at local, statewide, and national conferences. Active Literacy Consultants

  • Evelyn Arroyo is a former principal at a K-8 school in Phoenix, Arizona. She has taught 2nd through 10th grade in El Paso, Texas, and has over a quarter of a century experience in education. Evelyn has provided professional development to numerous school districts and organizations around the country and has presented at state and national conferences. Her areas of expertise include data analysis, assessment, research-based strategies, reading, and English language learner instruction. Ms. Arroyo’s focus and passion is helping elementary and secondary educators close the achievement gap for minority students and English Language Learners, ELLs.   • Amy Benjamin is an author an educational consultant with many years of experience as an English teacher and staff developer in the field of strategic literacy.   • Rachel Bilmeyer Internationally known educational consultant Rachel Ann Billmeyer has extensive experience putting educational theory into practice.   • Rebecca Burns is president of RB Educational Consulting, LLC, located in Charleston, WV. A former teacher, district curriculum specialist, and educational research and development specialist for a regional educational laboratory, she has provided professional development, technical assistance, and keynote addresses on curriculum alignment, standards-based curriculum design, culturally responsive schooling and teaching practices, and instructional improvement for educators across the United States and in Puerto Rico.   • Janet Hale began integrating curriculum in her own classroom, school, and district. Since the mid-1980s, she has worked with vertical and horizontal teams to initially understand multidisciplinary instruction, as well as facilitate the creation of integrated curriculum units that enhance students' educational experiences. Current issues, such as meeting state standards and aligning curriculum and assessments, are also a consideration that Janet focuses on when considering a school's or district's reform needs.
